WIRRAL PLAY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
The Wirral Play Development Centre is the hub of the Wirral Play Council.
In 1980, the original Play Development Centre opened in shop premises on St. Anne Street, Birkenhead, with grant aid received through the Inner Area (Community Chest) Programme.
In 1983, again with help through the Community Chest, the Wirral Play Council moved to 255 Beckwith Street, Birkenhead (the old Birkenhead General Hospital). This building proved to be an ideal home for the Play Council for the next ten years.
In 1993, we moved to our current premises, the old Transport & General Workers' Union building, Berner Street, Birkenhead. Its distinctive extension was completed in 1998 and houses a play resource library, training room, play equipment hire centre, arts and crafts shop, scrap store, as well as the Special Needs Group.
The building was repainted in 2008, and is now a playful bright green.
